The In’s and Out’s of Moving to College

Since I am currently packing for my final move to school, I thought that I would share some words of wisdom.  I have slowly developed my “skills” over the years, with some successes and failures, of course.  These tips will consist of things to take with you, things to keep in mind, and techniques, since all are very important while moving to school.

  • Bring cold drinks.  My freshman year, I moved in on the hottest day of August, and we did not have any cold drinks.  So, my Mom and I had to wait until my Dad ran to Wal-Mart for some last minute things, and when he stopped by McDonald’s on the way back.  It was a long, hot, and miserable day, so come prepared and maybe it won’t be so bad.
  • Bring reinforcements, but not too many.  If you are a freshman, you will have plenty of upperclassmen around to help you move in, but it is always nice to have some family around to help you unpack.  If you are an upperclassman, you won’t have that help, so bring your own!
  • Strategically pack the car.  Remember that the things near the back will come out first, so try to keep the things that you will need to use first near the back.
  • Don’t put everything in plastic bins.  As much as I love plastic bins and organization, they make packing a car difficult and bulky.  So either buy then when you arrive on campus (there are several Wal-Marts near Butler) or stack them inside each other in the car, and then fill them later.
  • Bring a toolbox.  This is a tip for just being prepared for college in general, from my Dad.  He made sure that I was outfitted with every tool I might need when I went to college, and my toolbox has become extremely popular during the first few weeks of each semester as people are moving around.  Also, make sure you use the services of Dads or brothers while you can, by enlisting them to use the tools to put together tables, storage units, or bookshelves.

My precious toolbox and I...

To all incoming freshmen:  Good luck with move-in!  I will be around helping out that day here and there, so be sure to tell me that you read my blog, because I love meeting people who have read it!  And prepare yourself for an amazing Welcome Week and college experience in general….Butler truly is an amazing place!  :)
